Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured therapy that changes how the brain stores distressing experiences, reducing their emotional charge so they no longer drive your present reactions. At Transformation Health Services, our therapists offer this treatment across our Virginia Beach, Richmond, Suffolk, Fredericksburg, and Brooklyn locations for adults dealing with trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and other conditions rooted in difficult past experiences. Rather than requiring you to describe those experiences in detail, the process uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain complete the processing it was unable to finish at the time.
What is EMDR?
EMDR is an evidence-based psychotherapy originally developed by Francine Shapiro to treat post-traumatic stress. It is now recognized by the American Psychological Association, the World Health Organization, and the Department of Veterans Affairs as an effective treatment for PTSD and trauma-related conditions. Its use has since expanded to anxiety, depression, phobias, and grief. The therapy is built on the premise that unprocessed memories, stored in a raw emotional form, are the source of many persistent psychological symptoms. This treatment restarts the brain’s natural processing, allowing those memories to be integrated in a way that no longer causes distress.
How EMDR Works
The treatment follows an eight-phase, structured protocol. Here is how each phase helps you heal:
Mapping your history
The therapist helps the family see the repeating pattern of interaction that keeps everyone stuck, such as a child withdrawing in response to a parent’s frustration, which then increases the parent’s frustration.
Building coping resources
Family members are guided to identify and express the deeper emotions, often fear, hurt, or longing, that drive their reactive behavior.
Processing the memory
The therapist facilitates new, more vulnerable exchanges between family members in session, creating moments of genuine emotional contact that begin to shift the relationship.
Installing a positive belief
As the family experiences new ways of connecting, these become more accessible outside of sessions, gradually replacing the old cycle with a more secure pattern of relating.
Completing each session safely
A body scan checks for remaining tension or distress before closing, ensuring you leave each session in a stable state.
Benefits of EMDR Therapy
- Significant reduction in the emotional intensity of traumatic memories, so they become something that happened rather than something still happening
- Relief from PTSD symptoms, including intrusive thoughts, nightmares, hypervigilance, and avoidance behaviors
- Improved sleep quality as the nervous system calms, and threat-processing at night decreases
- A shift in deeply held negative self-beliefs toward more accurate, grounded perspectives
- Reduced anxiety, panic, and reactivity in situations that previously triggered a trauma response
Who Benefits from EMDR?
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing is recommended for adults whose current symptoms are connected to distressing or traumatic past experiences. It is commonly a strong fit for individuals who:
- Have been diagnosed with PTSD or complex PTSD and have not found sufficient relief from talk therapy alone
- Are experiencing anxiety, depression, or panic that seems rooted in past events rather than current circumstances
- Carry deeply ingrained negative beliefs about themselves, such as feelings of shame, unworthiness, or unsafety, that insight alone has not shifted
- Have a history of childhood trauma, abuse, neglect, or adverse experiences that continue to affect the present
- Want a structured, evidence-based approach that does not require extensive verbal processing of difficult memories
An initial assessment at any of our Virginia Beach, Richmond, Suffolk, Fredericksburg, or Brooklyn locations will confirm whether this treatment is the right approach for your specific presentation.
The EMDR Experience at Transformation Health Services
Here is what your treatment looks like from the first appointment forward:
Step 1: History taking and treatment planning
Your therapist conducts a thorough review of your history, identifies treatment targets, and builds a plan that sequences the work in a safe, manageable order.
Step 2: Preparation and resourcing
Before any processing begins, you learn grounding and stabilization techniques that allow you to manage distress that may arise during or between sessions.
Step 3: Active processing sessions
Using bilateral stimulation, your therapist guides you through sets of processing exercises focused on your identified targets, adjusting the protocol in real time based on your response.
Step 4: Integration and closure
As processing targets are resolved, sessions shift to reinforcing positive beliefs, tracking overall symptom change, and preparing you for treatment completion.
Why Choose Transformation Health Services for EMDR?
Trained trauma clinicians
Our therapists are trained in this protocol and apply it within a broader trauma-informed framework that prioritizes your safety and stability throughout.
Paced to your readiness
We do not rush the preparation phase. Processing begins only when you and your therapist have established the coping resources and therapeutic trust needed to proceed safely.
Integrated with other modalities when needed
This treatment can be combined with other approaches in our practice, including somatic therapy, DBT, or individual supportive therapy, as your clinical picture warrants.
Consistent care across all locations
Sessions are available at our Virginia Beach, Richmond, Suffolk, Fredericksburg, and Brooklyn offices, with the same clinical standards applied at every site.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. The protocol does not require you to describe traumatic events in depth. You hold the memory in mind during bilateral stimulation, but you are not asked to verbalize it extensively. Many clients find this one of the treatment's significant advantages over traditional trauma-focused talk therapy.
The number of sessions depends on the complexity and number of treatment targets. Some people experience significant relief with single-incident trauma in eight to twelve sessions. Complex or developmental trauma typically requires longer treatment. Your therapist will give you a clearer estimate after the assessment phase.
The most common form is guided eye movements, where you follow the therapist's hand or a light bar while holding a memory in mind. Some therapists use tapping or auditory tones instead. The sensation is mild, and the pace is controlled by you and your therapist together.
This treatment is most strongly indicated when symptoms are connected to specific distressing memories or events. For presentations that are primarily biological or situational with no clear memory component, other approaches may be a better first-line choice. Your clinician will assess fit at intake.
